Massachusetts Maritime Academy is a fully accredited, four-year, co-educational state university offering Bachelor’s and Master of Science degrees that are highly regarded in the worldwide maritime industry and beyond. Located at the west end of the scenic Cape Cod Canal, MMA is an hour’s drive from the thriving urban communities of Boston and Providence and offers easy access to the pristine beaches of Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard.

Academy employees are part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts system and participate in generous benefits such as state retirement along with health insurance, dental, vision, long and short term disability, paid sick leave; and twelve paid holidays.  Non-faculty positions also receive generous paid vacation leave.

Faculty teaching load averages 12 credit hours per semester with the fall semester running from September 1 to mid-December and the spring semester running from March 1 to mid-June.  Faculty are required to teach fall and spring semesters but have opportunities to teach during the winter and summer intersessions as additional contract employment.  Winter intersession runs from mid-December through February.  Summer intersession runs from mid-June through August.  

Faculty and staff belong to one of three collective bargaining units on campus. 

  • Faculty- full-time faculty belong to the Massachusetts State College Association.
  • Professional Staff - full-time professional staff belong to the Association of Professional Administrators
  • Classified Employees – full-time classified employees belong to the American Federation of State and County and Municipal Employees, Local 1067/Council 93, AFL-CIO
