About the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Library
We're here to help! Professional library staff assist students with research for papers and assignments. You can also ask us about Google Apps (like Google Docs), presentation software, copyright, Open Education Resources (OER) and plagiarism prevention.
-
Online resources are restricted to current students and staff.
To give you an idea of what we offer, anyone may search through our entire collection or freely read digitized issues of Massachusetts Maritime Academy yearbooks.
Collections
The library maintains an outstanding collection of print and electronic books, journals, newspapers, media and online databases that support undergraduate and graduate research and teaching. Remote access to the digital collection is available 24/7/365 for students, faculty and staff.
Over 90% of the collection is accessible online with more than 415, 523 titles including access to thousands of full-text journal and newspaper subscriptions. The library is fully integrated with the statewide library network, affording access to millions of volumes by courier and interlibrary loan services. Materials required for license examinations are loaned to students for the semester. Professional staff are available to assist with research using scholarly resources and materials from the Academy Archives.
Course Support
Faculty can request library support specific to their courses such as in-class research instruction sessions, and online course guides. Faculty can also request that books or other research materials be placed on reserve for their courses; these are available for short-term borrowing by students.
Library/IT Service Desk
The Massachusetts Maritime Academy Library/IT Service Desk is located on the first floor of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Information Commons. This is where library materials are checked out or returned and where research questions can be answered.
Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to ask for library-related assistance in person, by telephone (508-830-5034), or emailing library@thebigkahunaspokane.com.
The Service Desk's IT staff also offer assistance with any technology-related issues, including the creation of user accounts, providing access to Academy systems, and provisioning of computer equipment and peripherals.
Archives and Yearbooks
Archives
The Massachusetts Maritime Academy Archives preserves the institutional records, historical publications, and artifacts of the Academy dating back to its establishment as the Massachusetts Nautical Training School in 1891. The Academy’s records document its activities and operations, including the development of maritime education, to the present day.
Additionally, the Archives stores papers, materials, and publications of Academy alumni, as well as a collection of materials related to the history of the Cape Cod Canal, where the Academy has made its home since 1949.
We invite you to visit our online catalog to search and navigate finding aids to our records and collections, access our available digital materials, and browse related names and subjects.
For specific questions about our holdings, please contact us at archives@thebigkahunaspokane.com.
Yearbook
Massachusetts Maritime Academy's yearbook, The Muster, is an annual collection of memories and portraits of the academic year. From cover to cover, the yearbook is designed and created by the Student Government Association's (SGA) yearbook committee, one of the longest standing student clubs on campus. The committee is comprised of underclassmen cadets and led by an upperclassman Editor.
The process to create The Muster begins in August with Pre-Orientation for the Cadre and Orientation for incoming Cadet Candidates, and concludes the following Summer with the commissioning and commencement ceremonies. Student photographers capture images of these events, among numerous activities and ceremonies held on campus throughout the year.
The Massachusetts Maritime Academy Archives holds volumes of The Muster for the years 1945 through 2023 (excepting 1948, 1970, and 1973). Many of these yearbooks have been deposited with the Library and Archives by the Commandant's Office, which oversees the SGA, while some Academy alumni have donated their personal copies.
Digital formats of The Muster yearbooks are available online at the Academy’s Internet Archive page, thanks to the Boston Public Library’s Digital Commonwealth program.
